Q: What paperwork do I need to turn in to try out?

A: Current physical, GFeller concussion form and COMPLETED Athletic Packet through the Athletic Clearance website. It is YOUR responsibility to make sure your physical and paperwork is up to date and complete on the Athletic Clearance website. You cannot participate in clinics or try outs without all forms on file.

Q: How many athletes are on each squad?

A: We do not set a number before tryouts. Squad members are chosen based on skill, ability, and positions needed.

Q: Do I have to come to all the tryout days?

A: All three days are required unless you are playing a UA spring sport or have gotten the absence approved by the coaches prior to tryouts.

Q: When will we find out who made the squads and how?

A: The squads will be decided and posted by number only on the UA Cheer webpage by 9pm the night of tryouts. Decisions are FINAL

Q: Is tumbling required? What tumbling is scored?

A: Tumbling is not required; however, it is part of the scoresheet and something that we are working on building within the program and need to be competitive during the competition season. Scoring begins with a standing back handspring.

Q: How are the squad members chosen?

A: Tryouts begin during clinics. Attitude, growth, willingness to listen and learn are assessed as well as ability to stunt. These are reflected on the scoresheet in addition to the cheers, dances, jumps, and tumbling you will perform during the tryout. The score on the sheet is only a partial factor in the overall decision.

Q: How much time and commitment is required as a member of JV/Varsity Cheer?

A: A member of a UAHS Cheerleading team commits for BOTH football and basketball season. Typically, each team practices twice a week and cheers every Thursday (JV)/Friday (Varsity) night during football season (including games over Fall Break). During basketball season, teams practice at least once a week and cheer at all home games (2-3 per week) and some away games. ALL practices, games and the competition are MANDATORY! Both teams participate in community service as a team, Varsity sponsors a summer camp for K-6 students and both teams will have a skills/choreography camp that is mandatory over the summer. Teams practice over the summer; however, girls are excused if they have submitted their vacation days in advance. Varsity cheer will be competing again in the NCHSAA State Invitational this year which will entail some extra practices, a showcase and the competition date which is still TBD.

Q: What is the cost to be on the squad?

A: Each cheerleader is required to join CAC (approx. $270) and pay the sports fee for each season (Fall Cheer $25 & Winter Cheer $25). Team designated warm-ups (approximately $140), cheer shoes and spanks need to be provided by each athlete for personal use.
