July 17, 2025 - MONROE, NC – Union Academy is proud to announce the appointment of Grant Williams as the school’s new Athletic Director. A familiar face on campus since 2017, Williams brings nearly a decade of leadership, coaching, and educational experience to his new role.

A two-time graduate of West Virginia institutions, Williams earned his B.S. in Athletic Coaching Education from WVU Institute of Technology, where he was a four-year starter on the baseball team and served as team captain for three seasons. He later completed a B.S. in Health and Physical Education K-Adult from Marshall University.

Before arriving at Union Academy, Williams served as a PE teacher at Duval K-8 School and worked as a personal baseball instructor with Between the Lines Baseball. He also coached the Huntington Patriots travel baseball team, gaining experience with multiple age groups and developing a strong foundation in youth sports instruction.

Williams joined Union Academy in October 2017 as a high school history teacher before transitioning into teaching PE, weightlifting, and sports medicine. Since 2017, he has served as head baseball coach, leading the Cardinals to the state playoffs in five of the last six seasons and earning recognition as the 2022 Union County Baseball Coach of the Year by the Enquirer-Journal. Additionally, Williams spent four years as assistant football coach and two years as the middle school basketball coach. During the 2024–2025 school year, he also served as Middle School Athletic Director, helping to strengthen and streamline programs for younger student-athletes.

In his new role, Williams will continue coaching the high school baseball team while overseeing all athletic programs at Union Academy.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to continue serving UA and supporting our student-athletes as they grow on and off the field,” Williams said. “Union Academy has been home to me for the past several years, and I’m grateful to be part of a community that values hard work, character, and teamwork. I look forward to building on the strong foundation we have and continuing to grow our programs with Cardinal pride.”

Interim Head of School Amy Yermack praised Williams’s leadership and deep connection to the school:

“Coach Williams has a proven track record of inspiring student-athletes and building programs rooted in discipline, respect, and perseverance. His passion for Union Academy is evident in everything he does, and we are confident that under his leadership, our athletic department will thrive.”

Coach Williams is married to Sophia Williams, and they have a two-year-old son, Tre.
