Union Academy is proud to announce Mason Sledge as the new Head Football Coach for the Cardinals. After serving as Interim Football Coach for the 2024 season, Coach Sledge demonstrated exceptional leadership by guiding the team to a 5-5 regular season record—the program's best performance since 2019.
“I am incredibly honored and excited to be named the Head Football Coach at Union Academy,” said Coach Mason Sledge. “Working with our players this past season has been an amazing experience, and I’m proud to lead such a talented and dedicated group of young men. We also have a fantastic coaching staff that shares my vision for the program. I look forward to building on the foundation we’ve created.”
A proud graduate of Monroe High School, Coach Sledge brings a wealth of experience both as an athlete and a coach. His educational background includes a Master of Arts in Teaching from North Carolina A&T State University (2022), a Master of Education in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus on Exercise Science from Campbell University (2018), and dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Criminal Justice and Sociology from UNC Charlotte (2016).
Coach Sledge’s playing career laid the foundation for his coaching success. As an offensive lineman at UNC Charlotte, he was part of the program's first recruiting class, appearing in 28 games with 10 starts. He continued his career as a starting center at Campbell University as a graduate student, where he gained invaluable on-field experience that directly informs his coaching philosophy.
His coaching career has been equally impressive. At Campbell University, Coach Sledge served as an Offensive Coordinator Graduate Assistant, working with an offensive line that helped produce one of the top offenses in the nation. His responsibilities included teaching fundamentals, breaking down opponents, and scouting prospective athletes. At Monroe High School, he was instrumental as the Offensive Line Coach for the varsity football team and Head Baseball Coach, among other roles. Since joining Union Academy in April 2023, he has served as a physical education teacher and taken on multiple coaching responsibilities, including Head Men’s Basketball Coach, Run-Game Coordinator, Special Teams Coordinator, and Offensive Line Coach for the football team.
“We are thrilled to have Coach Sledge leading our football program,” said Justin Frashier, Athletic Director. “His depth of experience, dedication to student-athletes, and proven ability to build strong teams make him the perfect choice to lead Union Academy football into an exciting new chapter.”
Union Academy looks forward to continued growth and success under Coach Sledge’s leadership.
Coach Sledge is married to his wife, Madison, and they have two daughters.
